Call for Submissions
The sea/film team are back for 2021, working on our next community cinema idea for the Yorkshire Coast. We are exploring time.

Living through the pandemic, how is our understanding of time changing? The days seem long, but the weeks & months pass quickly. So, how does cinema help us to understand ideas about time and our future? Why is film so vital in capturing a moment in time? And how did people and places from Scarborough’s history help us to think about space & time differently?

Our project is called Time and Tide vol 1 and is happening in two ways. Firstly, we are putting together an online programme of short films that will feature a mix of documentary, art film and work from local filmmakers that explores some of these big ideas around time. This programme of film will be available online, alongside sea/film words offering a context to create a shared understanding around these films.
​
Secondly, we are creating another zine for the Yorkshire Coast. Would you like to get involved? We’re taking submissions of photography, creative writing, art and ideas to feature in our zine - everything related to ideas around time: living through the pandemic and how our coastline, town & sense of place helps us to understand the passing of time. Do you have any pictures, memories or stories you want to share?

Please send over submissions by Friday March 5th to seafilmscarborough@gmail.com. The zines will be printed, everyone contributing receives free access to our special film programme. We are particularly keen to hear from under-represented groups and young people on the Yorkshire Coast.

Our Time and Tide vol 1 zine and film programme will be released the weekend the clocks change, on Friday March 26th. More details on tickets and access will be released in due course on our social media channels. (Times vol 2 will take place in an outdoor setting in October - tbc.)

NEW COLLABORATIVE PROJECT:
Waves
A wave is a form of affection and greeting, a valuable gesture in our current times. But waves are also what define and shape the movement of the sea. This project aims to bring people together, to think about and celebrate the sea, and how it both separates and joins us.
Waves is a new collaborative environmental film event devised by No Planet B, London, Sea/Film, Scarborough and Caribbean Pop-Up Cinema, Birmingham. It is a special online event comprising of three parts; an online screening event of short films and presentations, a digital zine and a community made film, all celebrating and exploring the theme of waves and how the sea connects us.

Martha Cattell of sea/film says: ‘Waves offers a great opportunity to create new partnerships with other community film organisations, and bring together new audiences and ideas in the process.’
Denyce Blackman of Caribbean Pop-Up Cinema says: “The Caribbean has a special relationship with the sea. The blue of the waves feature on island flags and form a vital part of Caribbean livelihoods, and West Indians of the Windrush generation traveled by sea to begin new lives in the UK. We invite everyone in the Caribbean diaspora to join this project which celebrates this significant part of our story.
Julia Brow of No Planet B says: ‘The oceans are integral to our life on Earth. Nearly half the global population depends on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. We are looking forward to engaging with audiences with this new creative project that explores both our interconnectedness with the sea and with each other.’

How to Get Involved
Zine Contributions: You can contribute to our community zine via submitting your work around the theme of waves, from poetry, art, photography, writing, histories here: shorturl.at/apyAR
We will be publishing the Zine as a free PDF and every contributor will receive a copy of their published work. Rules for contributions: Writing 550 words or less, the deadline for submissions is 31 July.
Video Contributions: Have you taken a clip of the sea whilst on holiday, or do you live by water? We are creating a unified and continuous wave, so need your help via short clips of waves, 30 sec or less which we will edit together. Submit your video clips here: shorturl.at/apyAR

Zine Call Out: WAVES
What we are looking for:
Images and Artwork: we are looking for submissions of photos or a drawing/painting of waves, with maybe a small piece of text accompanying it, explaining the view depicted/your thoughts on the view.
The text can be in the poetry or prose and may even just be a caption.

Creative Writing: We're also interested in writing and poetry on waves, interpret how you like!

Non-Fiction Writing: Is there some waves from a film, a memory or history that have interested you or even the science behind oceans/rivers?

Zine II: Windows
April 2020
The sea/film team are making another ‘zine. Following the publication of our last Shifting Sands zine in January, we’re returning with our latest edition in April 2020.
So, what is a ‘zine’ exactly? It’s a co-created community DIY magazine. We want to reflect people’s stories and views of what’s going on in Scarborough during these strange times we’re living in. Hopefully, a creative project that will bring communities together through the creation of a magazine that might, in some small way, act as a time capsule for the life we’re living now.

The theme for our new zine is Windows.
Now more than ever windows have become a key part of our lives. Although at first they may seem like a barrier to the outside world, they can also offer a sense of safety; a space for day-dreaming, experiencing the outdoors, and a way we can safely connect with those who are self-isolating or vulnerable.
In film windows function in many forms; a device through which an opportunity is suggested, implying a sense of captivity, a threat, a simple framing aid or as a place for observation.
For this zine we want people to look outwards from their windows and treat them like the screens of cinemas; to capture the everyday frames and views that you are currently experiencing.

What we are looking for:
Idea one: we are looking for submissions of a photo or a drawing/painting of a window, with a small piece of text accompanying it, explaining the view depicted/your thoughts on the view. The text can be in the poetry or prose and may even just be a caption.

Idea two: We're also interested in windows and memories. Do you have a clear memory of a Scarborough window from your childhood?
Did you always have a favourite view? We are looking for stories, art or images that relate to this theme on the Yorkshire Coast too.

Idea three: Stranger windows. Is there a building with a strange perspective on our town, or a Yorkshire Coast window onto something that always surprised you or stopped you in your tracks?

This zine will form part of a collective view of the town and the different ways of looking at it, with the aim of exploring the various ways that Scarborough is framed and viewed through more personal narratives. We want this project to be accessible and inclusive so please email us with any questions or suggestions.
Who can Submit:
We are looking for submissions from different age groups and the various locations around Scarborough and the Yorkshire Coast.
Distribution:
We will be printing this zine, a small strictly ltd print run to arrive in Scarborough independent shops & cafes after lockdown. The zine will mostly be distributed digitally. All contributors receive a free copy, and it will be available to buy on our website too. With all proceeds going to Community Kitchen Scarborough.

Shifting Sands Project in the Press

We Were really pleased to see our event Shifting Sands featured in a number of local and regional papers and radio shows. It really helps get the word out about our work here at sea/film and encourage future audiences to attend our events. We were also featured live on the drive time show of BBC Radio York on 17/1/20, on the night of our final shifting sands event, as well as other local radio Minster FM and Yorkshire Coast Radio.
